5 Tips For Autumn Decorating

autumnhomes

Now that summer is all but over, I’ve realised that it’s time to embrace autumn and all the good things it brings with it. There has already been a flurry of activity on Instagram with fellow homeowners turning their attention to autumn décor. For anyone who likes to reflect the changing seasons with design and decorations, it’s definitely the perfect time of year. The summer always feels like there’s more of an outdoor focus as we try to make the most of what little warmth and sunshine we have. But come autumn, we start to spend more time inside, and interior comforts become priorities as the temperatures dip.autumninteriors

Given this changing focus, and the fact that we’re already nearing the end of September, here are a few tips to keep in mind for autumn interior decorating.

1. Bring In Seasonal Greenery

When the autumn rolls around, our focus turns to colour palettes that combine warm shades. Burnt oranges, burgundy, and deep yellows are among the colours many associate with this season, largely because they reflect the shades of falling leaves. But as this handy list of autumn decorating ideas points out, this is also a nice time to bring seasonal greenery into your home. “Seasonal” depends to some extent on where you live, of course, but the idea is to use a bouquet of magnolia leaves, a few perennial flowers, or even some evergreen branches to bring nature into the home. These types of decorations also transition very naturally to the winter.

2. Stock The Home With Reclaimed Wood

There’s definitely a rustic quality to autumn design, and a lot of people find that it’s most effectively embraced through wooden furnishings and decorations. I love the warmth and period feel our reclaimed wood console table and mirror create to welcome guests into our home. There’s so much to be done even with a small amount of reclaimed wood however; be it crafting your own shelves or photo frames or simply putting up a sign (“Cosy Fire This Way”). Something we want to do is create a mantelpiece above our living room fireplace and could then use this to display autumn woodland gatherings.

3. Check Your Tool Collection

Just because the seasons are changing, doesn’t mean those crafty and DIY projects need to stop. Whether you’re working on a handmade presents, incorporating some autumnal projects into your home, or like us attacking the renovation with renewed vigour, you’ll want to make sure your tools are up to the task. A hammer, nails, and screwdriver are probably laying around somewhere, but for a professional-looking design job, it’s worth considering going for more heavy-duty appliances. Browsing through quality power drills with the latest technology can give you an idea if what you have is really up to the standard of today’s DIY and crafting efforts. If not, you can always pick up a high-end power drill to take care of most woodworking tasks that might be on the cards. We’ve got a log store coming at the end of October and if we do go ahead with our reclaimed wood mantel this side of Christmas, we’ll definitely be in need of a tools refresh.

4. Decorate With Food

For me, autumn is one of the best seasons to showcase beautiful food. We’re less concerned with salads and more with comforting soups and stews. One of my favourite Instagram accounts was recently showcasing an amazing collection of pumpkins and squashes harvested from her allotment and they make the perfect seasonal decorations. I’ll be joining the pumpkin brigade this year to hopefully welcome some trick or treaters and bringing some of those reds, golds and oranges into our home to compliment fireside hygge.

5. Hang Some New Photos

We came home from Cornwall with endless amounts of beautiful photos, capturing coastal views and countryside life. We’ve never really gone in for photo displays but I do love the idea of creating a gallery wall from our travels and now that our furbaby family is complete too! Being ginger, Boo is the perfect colour for autumn and we’ve already had plenty of leaf-strewn dog walks with Maddie so it would be a lovely seasonal refresh to actually get some of them on display. I also love the idea of personalising a canvas print with a meaningful photo. A great idea for an affordable and unique addition to interior décor.

I’m determined to embrace the season this year and would love to know what your tips are for getting autumn ready. As always, it’s a happy and comfortable time of year.

I love this time of year it is stunning, I really believe our home is more f a autumn winter home, I feel it really comes into its own this time of year. I think its the coziness of the open fire, and the darkness shuts off the views which makes you feel as if you are in a cocoon x

Yes I totally agree, and I’ve been making more effort to try and embrace it rather than rail against it which is my normal default cold-weather behaviour 🙂 Xx
