A Change Would Do You Good

Yesterday I turned 37. Somehow 34, 35, 36 came and went but 37! It feels SO close to 40. But then, so what? Embracing that whole ‘age is just a number’ thing it was time for a change a couple of weeks ago and I went back to being a redhead and it feels great. Red is that colour that makes me feel like me, alive, happy, different, strong. It’s rich and vibrant, not dull and lacklustre.

The problem is that its been virtually impossible to find a hairdresser in London (of all places!) that I’ve really felt comfortable with. In 15 years I’ve looked all over this city to find a place where paying out to have my hair professionally coloured would be worth the cost and it’s never happened. Central London is too commercial, the domain of Toni & Guy et al who really couldn’t give a monkeys about hair – yep, you can try and argue me otherwise but good luck. By contrast the suburbs are too ‘safe’ preferring blue rinses and trims to radical hair styles and bold colour.

The social media grapevine is a wonderful thing and as we’ve settled in south-east London and watched it ebb and flow with development and creatives finding a new home, I came across Deptford Market Yard which has opened up space under the original railway arches for independent shops, businesses and restaurants and home to my now hair mecca, The Box.

It felt a little nerve-wracking to pay my first visit to The Box, having decided that it was time to go red again. I’ve wrestled with my conscience about maybe I’m too old or maybe it’s not good for my hair but we only live once and seeing their Instagram feed and reading about the products they used gave me confidence that I’d get the right service. “How red do you want to go?” asked Laura. I showed her a picture from my last red incarnation back in 2014. “Oh, we can do better than that”. Bingo.

From start to finish, I loved the service and care Laura took. She explained to me all the way through what she was doing to my hair, how I could maintain and protect the colour including treating it with Olaplex (which if you haven’t heard of it, WHERE have you been?) and encouraging me to even change my style and cut a fringe in. There was no sense of rushing me or making me feel like ‘just another customer’ and combined with their utterly stylish location, the type of place where a hair cut feels like genuine pampering rather than someone’s afterthought.

It’s taken me a little while to get used to my new look especially as I’m so used to being a wash and go girl. With a fringe comes great responsibility and I’m up earlier each day because without styling it tends to go a little unruly but my hair feels in great condition and most importantly, it’s a change – positive, bold, me.
