A Gluten Free Delight from Sponge

If you follow me on Instagram, you may know that I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy in autumn and have been dedicated to following a gluten-free lifestyle ever since. I haven’t yet fully written about the journey to better health yet since there are still more tests to undergo in hospital in early February, but thankfully whilst I’m not yet fully recovered life is very different now and there’s been such an improvement in the very physical symptoms of my intolerance.

It’s not been easy to adapt, especially for me – the Queen of convenience eating. But along with my cooking skills an entire set of new taste buds have been developing and the bread cravings have now finally disappeared for good with the realisation that there’s more to life than cheese on toast.

Thankfully it’s not all preaching from my evangelical healthy high-horse and my sweet tooth steadfastly remains. So imagine my delight last week when I came home from work to find a box from a company called Sponge waiting for me. Intrigued, I opened the box and almost squealed with delight, remembering that my lovely friend Karen who blogs over at Missing Sleep had popped a message to be on the lookout for something edible in the post as an early birthday pressie from my oldest godsons.

I cannot convey the joy that cake brings me, it’s one of the simplest yet most pleasurable indulgences in life. And let me tell you, unlike some elements of baking where you can be painfully aware how different gluten free is, with these cakes you would NEVER know!

Sponge don’t just specialise in gluten free and have the most amazing range of cakes available via their website for delivery. You can order standard size or as in this case, a box full of little mini-cakes. I received 16 (plus a little bottle of Prosecco, yum!) in 4 flavours of chocolate, Victoria Sponge, Apple Crumble and Carrot and they are all completely heavenly. Even better, since Pete is on his epic health and fitness regime until the end of March he can’t eat any and so they’re all mine.

They are beautifully moist, incredibly tasty and well packaged, each coming individually wrapped in cellophane before being placed in a pretty gift box. A giftbox of 16 little cakes is £23.99 which I also think is a complete steal, especially if you consider that gluten-free normally seems to be a license to treble the price.

I haven’t been asked to write this review at all but just want to excitedly share the love. It’s so nice to come home from work and know that there’s a little tasty cake waiting for me which is actually not filled with vegetables and is ever so slightly naughty.

Oh wow they look tasty, I’d gobble up the Apple Crumbles ones first! So good that there’s a company offering decently priced gluten free goods. Enjoy! x
