A Lesson In Fine Art With Paint By Conran

It’s a testament to how fast time is flying this “summer” that I’ve found myself with a rainy afternoon at my desk trying to catch up with writing about some really fun events I’ve attended over the past couple of months. One of those was an interactive painting masterclass held at the flagship Conran shop in Chelsea where we were invited to get experimenting with colour and create our very own piece of ‘fine art’ to take home.

I was excited to return to my former West London home albeit with a slightly intimidated pace in my step because to me fine art represents something you would see in one of the galleries I walked past en route to the store rather than anything I’m capable of producing. My aunt is an incredibly talented watercolour and mixed-media artist and regularly exhibits locally to her down in Devon but the artist gene in my family has very definitely passed me by.

However, colour and interiors are of course two of my favourite things and I’m always game to try something new. Arriving at Conran we had some time to have a little look around and several things went on to my ever-growing home wish-list. That lottery win, for the lottery I never play, cannot come soon enough. The more time I spend at interiors destinations and meeting other creative bloggers, the more it encourages me to be bold and brave with my choices but the learning process is slow.

Our teacher for the event was interior designer Sim Barker who writes about interiors for the press, has completed projects for clients such as the BBC down in Bristol and also teaches at the City of Bath college, encouraging her students to feel confident and empowered to work with colour, texture and light in their own individual way. She was quick to re-assure us that our pre-conceived ideas of what fine art is should be ignored because essentially anyone can produce a piece of fine art simply by being brave with colour choices.

For the purpose of getting messy, we had at our disposal some tins of ‘Paint by Conran‘ paint which I was overjoyed to try having never worked with them before and of course having an entire house full of rooms which will need painting at a future point. What makes this range of paint work so well is of course that its been created with an entire range of complementary interiors in mind:

The Paint by Conran range is designed to help you make the most of your home. Conran’s designers live and breathe colour, and the colours chosen work beautifully with Conran’s furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories. Even better, the team have drawn on their expertise in architecture and interiors to ensure that the paints are practical and durable.

Paint by Conran is different from any other paint range. Beautiful colours of each landscape in mind, to reflect the very best of our glorious countryside in your home.

We were each given a canvas to work on and Sim demonstrated how different colour palettes can be used together and how adding something different can create an entirely new concept. I had chosen to use yellow and blue (or mustard and navy to be more accurate) but then decided to add in some crazy fuschia pink right at the end.

As you can see, an artist I will never make and probably have the skill level that I had messing around with paint in nursery but what I loved about this session was there are no rules, not really. It can be how you want to interpret it rather than having to be precise and join the dots. That’s my kind of painting but I think for now I’ll stick to painting on a DIY basis which is something I’m good at.

Thank you to Paint By Conran for inviting me to attend this event. All words, opinions and images are my own unless otherwise stated.
