Interiors: A Sanctuary of Colour

One of the problems I have with our house is my unending ability to start projects and not. quite. finish. them. It’s not a boredom thing, it’s that in keeping with our Springer, my attention span is lacking. Too eager, not enough dedication. Too easily inspired, always wanting the next thing.

With this in mind, I’ve been giving some thought to redecorating our bedroom. Most of the decorating that we’ll do at this point is only going to be temporary and so I’m torn between leaving things as they are and waiting to get new floors and windows in before we redecorate properly, or giving everything a temporary facelift because otherwise it might take a while and we’ll therefore potentially be living with years of mucky walls.

Our bedroom is a case in point. The previous owners had a loft converted to create a large top floor bedroom with en-suite for their twin daughters. Unfortunately the girls didn’t get on and set about trying to destroy it. These pictures don’t really tell the truth, taken hastily as they were on my phone a day or two after we moved in 17 months ago, but the walls are covered in pen marks, dirt and grime and the blue paint is very insipid and already flaking in places.

It is a really beautiful room with windows on two opposite sides meaning it floods with light on even the darkest of days, plus being at the top of the house it does (or at least has the potential to) feel like a proper sanctuary. It’s also a big space which you can’t really see from these pictures – currently we have a king-sized bed, two big chests of drawers, two wardrobes and you could easily still fit another bed in, plus a lovely view (by London standards!) from the back.

One day we want to rip up the carpet and replace it with something else, possibly the same floor in our office, as well as figure out some clever storage system to make the most of the space. I’d love a floor lamp and a comfy chair, to make it a space we properly enjoy being in rather than just a bedroom.

In the meantime, I’m getting more and more fed up with the walls but am totally lacking inspiration for a temporary replacement. My colleague brought in this Farrow and Ball paint chart he got with a newspaper at the weekend as we’d been talking about interiors last week and perhaps a soft green is the colour I’m drifting towards.

All I do know is that this has to be one project that gets completed if it ever gets off the ground – having half the walls lovely and clean and the other half dirty and blue would be even worse!

Do you have a finished bedroom? What colour do you love for a tranquil sanctuary?

I spend a fair amount of time looking at that very same paint chart but am still to make a decision. So many colours! Our whole house is painting in a modern-sounding name that’s basically magnolia but I’m thinking go waiting until both boys are in school full time in a couple of years before I tackle it.

I have NO idea how people decide, and they seem so calm and sorted about it too! And I am dithering over something that realistically will only ever be temporary, goodness knows what will happen when we have to decide on a final choice! X

I love that you admit to starting things but never quite finishing them – I’m terrible for doing that! Very excited to see which colour you go for, it looks such a great space. x
