Earlier this week, the hubs and I spent a few days in Munich courtesy of my day job. We met via work 12 years ago (eek!) and because we’re both in a similar industry he was able to come with me as he’s currently doing some consultant work on behalf of the company I work for.
Our destination was the Sofitel Munich Bayerpost, located brilliantly right next to Hauptbahnhof where the trains come straight in from the airport so when we arrived on a drizzly Sunday afternoon thankfully we didn’t have far to go.

The hotel website describes the Munich Bayerpost perfectly: “History meets modernity at Sofitel Munich Bayerpost, a contemporary design hotel in Munich’s former Bavarian Royal Post Office. Behind the historic building’s neoclassical façade lies the jewel of Munich’s luxury hotels – a blend of avant-garde architecture, high technology and sumptuous French-inspired design.”
The elegant and clearly historic facade is in complete contrast to the interiors but both are absolutely stunning, with the inside of the hotel being the epitome of sleek, cool sophistication – dark walls, beautiful scents and mood lighting. It’s absolutely befitting of a spa hotel and a luxury one with every little detail having been considered.
We checked into our room on the 4th floor and despite the temptation to just crash out for the rest of the afternoon and evening, we suspected that Sunday might be the only day we had for any kind of sightseeing so we dropped our bags and strolled into the old town under direction from the Concierge, which was only 15 minutes or so from the hotel.
Munich “Old Town” is just beautiful, absolutely stunning. The shops aren’t particularly different to anything you might find back home but the buildings are what you would expect from a European city in this area, it reminded me a lot of Vienna and Prague both of which I love.
It was incredibly busy for a Sunday evening, we both agreed more so than Central London would have been on a Sunday evening but it was a lovely buzz of locals heading out for dinner and tourists taking in the evening air and breathtaking buildings.
A group of us ended up at the Hofbrauhaus, a legendary Munich beer house dating back to the 16th century. Definitely an amazing experience with live music and enough lederhosen to cover a mountain.
The main days of our conference were Tuesday and Wednesday so on Monday after helping with some workshops I had a couple of hours spare to get a look at the city in daylight and wandered back to the area we’d been in the night before. It’s a very walkable city and I just love exploring.
As always, I kept telling Pete how much I want to live there because I fall in love with every place I ever visit. Travelling is such a tonic when you’re otherwise rushing around the place like a headless chicken. Hopefully one day I’ll return to Munich when there isn’t a work agenda 😉

Totally, I definitely can’t complain. I’m happy to buzz off somewhere once or twice a year for sure, it’s always a lot of fun and I’ve just about recovered 😉 X
