Interiors: Adding Colour With Stylish Rugs

landofrugs1

Last week I wrote this post about how much our home is in need of some beautiful wooden floors to replace the laminate (hallway and dining room) and carpet (living room) that we inherited – I just really don’t get on with carpets and last night my head fell into my hands yet again as Maddie came racing in from being outdoors and stamped muddy paw prints all through the living room for the millionth time.

There’s no shortage of inspiration for my future living room and flooring ideas over on Pinterest but sometimes you can have too much of a good thing and part of me thinks that going from a mile-deep carpet no matter how much I hate it to the streamlined, smooth, hardness of wood will not appease my tootsies or the feelings of coldness that reverberate around our 193os home.

Just like the rest of our house, the living room is a work in progress and the carpet is in much worse condition now than this picture about 18 months ago

I’m starting to think about how we can use rugs to strike the perfect harmony between the wooden floors which we really want whilst still adding some warmth and colour to our home and love the collection available from Land of Rugs. They have such a wide choice of designs and styles, featuring from geometric and colourful to monochrome and traditional that you could easily find one to suit any taste. I’ve been looking through the collection and picked out a few of my favourites including the Inaluxe Coda Rug shown at the top of this post.

Our colour scheme for the living room is still to be decided but it will focus around our grey sofas, and with the addition of a wooden floor I do worry slightly about the room becoming too dark despite the big bay window. The Inaluxe Coda Rug, inspired by designs from Australian Fine Artists Kristina Sostarko and Jason Odd, would provide the perfect splash of brightness and the tonal colours are perfect for the changing seasons.

Another favourite has to be this gloriously PINK shaggy rug. I’m pretty sure this would not get past Pete’s approval but I think me, Maddie and our kitten-to-be would all be blissfully happy stretched out in front of the fire on this beautiful rug that just invites you to dive right in. It also comes in a huge array of different sizes so is ideal for most living rooms.

My final pick is this absolutely divine OPS Grey Wool rug which is handtufted! What’s not to love about being handtufted (can you tell I love this word?) This for me is the ultimate in style and sophistication, lending itself nicely to a Nordic/Scandinavian colour scheme and a minimalist interiors approach which probably more closely represents my style. It’s not because I don’t love “things” it’s because with me, things just look messy, not at all beautiful and eclectic. So yes, I’m a fan of this monochrome rug and it would match the sofas. And the dog, more or less.

At the moment we don’t precisely know when the floor updating will happen but when it does, we know where to look for the best selection of accompanying accessories thanks to Land of Rugs.

Do you have rugs at home or are you more a lover of carpets… or both?

This is a collaborative post but all words, thoughts and opinions are my own.

We have a carpets in some of our room and wooden floors in others. I’ve always loved wooden floors much more than carpet, but it is a practical choice in our house as it’s so draughty. We’d like to take the carpet up in the sitting room and sand down the boards, but I know it will be SO cold and draughty. I’m considering a rug over the carpet to add a bit of interest instead! We have Karndean on our hall floor which was laid on top of old boards (which were in bad condition and didn’t match once we repaired them) – it looks great, but also is much warmer than bare boards would be. x

My preference is for hard floors and rugs. I love the combination. Under floor heating is my dream, though. We had it in our apartment in Switzerland and it was fab to walk round with no socks on but feel warm wood below your feet.

We’ve only got carpet in our bedroom now. I was wary about wooden floors when we moved in but now absolutely love them and in the last refurb we got rid of another carpet. Rugs and slippers are a must though, but that’s not so bad either. And it’ll mean you can write handtufted a few more times yet… 🙂 #homeetc

It’s definitely the right combination for me! Hopefully it won’t be too long until we can get some of these carpets up 🙂 Xx

we have taken the carpets out of all our rooms as we have done them. We have stripped the floor boards in our bedroom and the children have laminate (the floorboards will be stripped when they’re older and less likely to wee/ drop heavy toys/draw on them!. In our living room we have a really nice laminate laid – again we want to expose the floorboards in the future but not practical at the moment for us. We bought a lovely big run from Ikea and it really adds to the room. xx

Ah that sounds great and really well thought out! We’ve got a laminate hybrid in the office room which is fab – it’s very durable but has all the quality and look of wood. So many plans, so little money haha! Xx

Eurgh — carpet — it’s the bane of my life. Particularly in our dining room which also doubles up as a hallway. I can’t WAIT to replace it with hard flooring — although I’ll definitely take the sharp edges off with some lovely rugs too. LOVE that first shot — particularly the fact that the rug is echoed in the artwork!! That’s very clever! 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up with us! 🙂 #HomeEtc

Thanks for the advice for living room improvement. It’s interesting to learn that refinishing a room can actually give a dramatic upgrade to a home with a fraction of the cost.
