UK Edit: A Home From Home With Cornish Gems

Tregassick House The Dairy

Since we got Maddie, Pete and I have discovered a new-found love for holidaying at home and after our lovely week in Cornwall and Devon last September decided to return for another week at the same time this year. We were naive in our planning back in 2015, thinking it was possible to flit around self-catering accommodation for a few days here and there. We left everything very late and ended up having to find hotels to stay in which was lovely but very expensive.

This year, we were organised and booked a week in a self-catering cottage through Cornish Gems, all the way back in January. It’s a lovely time of year for us to go away, we’re not governed by school holidays so can wait until everyone else returns from holiday before setting off on our own little adventures and with Septembers generally being very lovely weather-wise in recent years, it’s still possible to find some last summer warmth.

We didn’t have a specific area in mind, instead looking for something which slept 2 and was dog-friendly. So it came to pass that we’re here in the self-catering accommodation adjoining Tregassick House on the Roseland Peninsula and it’s absolutely stunning. The Old Dairy and Cowshed were converted to luxury self-catering in 2013 and our home for the week is the smaller Dairy, perfect for 2 people plus pooch. I’m fussy when it comes to hotels, ridiculously so, but much more laid back when it comes to going it alone and never have particularly high expectations. Just as well really because despite Cornish Gems stating that they offer luxury properties, nothing could have prepared me for just how stunning it is here.

The accommodation offers an open plan living/dining/kitchen area which is so well equipped it puts most London flats to shame – a comfy two seater sofa with flat screen TV, dining table with chairs for 3 and everything in the kitchen from a washer/drier to a microwave and dishwasher. Egg cups, champagne glasses, a toast rack and gravy jug – from a simple breakfast to full on roast dinner, it’s all possible here. We also had a lovely selection of locally produced and thoughtful items waiting for us on arrival including tea and coffee, fresh milk in the fridge and Prosecco and chocolates. It was a most welcome sight after such a long journey down from London.

Decor is neutral and modern, calming shades of blues, greys and creams with underfloor heating and characterful high beams. High speed wi-fi that works, plenty of plug sockets in normal, logical places (listen up hotels!), tv with free view, radio and telephone. Yes, holidays are about switching off but when you live in (and love) London, there are a few essentials that are really non-negotiable. Pitching up a tent in a field is not my style so I’m unapologetic about my need for a little bit of luxury here and there 😉

I’ve been sleeping so well with the softest sateen bedding, feather-filled pillows (of which there are 2 per person, yay!) and a cosy thick duvet. It’s dark outside and so blissfully quiet. Dressing gowns are provided and towels are plentiful, big and soft. I’ve never understood hotels that provide towels so small they don’t even cover a kneecap, or one tiny stamp sized towel to share between two people. What is that about?

And the bathroom which I have ALL the envy of, especially as we have two fairly useless ones at home until we renovate them. I’m taking away so many tips. A monsoon shower head providing super hot water and fantastic pressure, drawers around the sink similar to the ones I saw on my press trip to Villeroy & Boch earlier in the year which make so much more sense than cupboards, heated towel rails and push-button sink plugs. Plus Cowshed toiletries waiting for us to use.

The owners of the self-catering accommodation live in the adjacent Tregassick House and were very kind in showing us around the property and recommending local pubs and dog walks. Just outside the door into the building (which is a gorgeous stable style), there is a small patio area with a table and two chairs, umbrella and BBQ in case the mood takes you. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast or an early evening drink overlooking the lovely garden and an amazing view off to St Mawes in the distance. There are also fields behind the main lawn so we could let Maddie off the lead and let her stretch her legs, not that she’s had much energy after days of endless walking.

Our holiday is far from over but it’s safe to say I’m really going to miss this place. It’s been beyond restorative so far, allowing us to switch off and refuel whilst still keeping up with our little daily necessities. Do check out Cornish Gems and their portfolio of properties – this isn’t sponsored or collaborative in any way but it’s too good a secret to keep to myself.

That cottage truly looks wonderful. It’s nice that you were able to find somewhere for you and the dog too, I’m bringing my first ever pup home next week so was worried about going holidays but this put me at ease 🙂
You’re totally right about those plug sockets and when it comes to wifi, especially for a blogger, it’s definitely a must!

Oh Alina how exciting!!! Yes thankfully in this country there seem to be loads of dog-friendly accommodation available, I’d definitely recommend Cornwall in general since so many of the pubs and cafes are dog-friendly and even so many shops too, plus all the amazing dog walks there are X

Thanks Elena, it was really lovely. I’m definitely with you on the luxury front, it’s the small details that make all the difference X

This looks gorgeous. I think it is vital that when we go away, the accommodation is at least equal (and preferably more) stylish, clean and better equipped than home. We spend a lot of time in Cornwall as this is where my husband is from and it’s always good to read about great accommodation. #HomeEtc

Oh this does look nice. I was waiting for this post, having seen some photos on Instagram. What a nice set up and how lovely to be welcomed with prosecco and chocolates! Thanks for sharing. Now that we are dog owners, we are on the look out for dig friendly accommodation too for our holidays.

It’s funny how it changes the dynamic of where you might go on holiday. It’s lovely to see Maddie out and about and doing what she loves best X
