Last year at the end of April, OH and I went to Sin City. The place I never wanted to go and probably would not have gone to even for ooh, let’s say £1,000,000. Despite having lived and studied in the US and been there numerous times, I simply wasn’t interested whatsoever in visiting Las Vegas. Dirty, tacky, bawdy – the adjectives keep on rolling and none of them are complimentary.
Given a fully-funded work trip for him however, it seemed rude not to at least give it the benefit of the doubt seeing as we only had to pay for my flight, a couple of extra nights and some spending money, and so the unlikeliest of heart breakers got right under my skin. I had planned to write lots and lots about our trip but a year has gone by and so that seems a bit redundant. Instead, I’ll just post tons of pictures and with a little bit about what we did and save a separate post for Grand Canyon because it was that amazing.
We stayed at the MGM Grand. That hotel has 5,000 rooms. It takes what feels like 30 minutes just to walk from your room out of the hotel.
We went to see Elton John on our first night, towards the end of one of his residencies. It was great but we’d been awake for about 30 hours by that point and both found ourselves taking nanosecond naps. Despite the couple of ladies sitting behind us who were very vocal in their adoration of Mr John (think “that” scene in When Harry Met Sally).
We walked, a lot. Up and down and up and down the Strip. We ate lunch in the Eiffel Tower overlooking the stunning Bellagio. We drank cocktails in the Mandarin Oriental. We saw lots of people dressed up as Elvis and other amusing characters. A guy dressed as SpiderMan shouted “Hey Mary-Jane” after me owing to my newly dyed red hair. We took a bus to Downtown Las Vegas to visit the Mob Museum, watch the Light Parade and soak up the sun at the wonderfully creative Container Park.
We took a day trip out to the Grand Canyon which was just one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever been too, and I got back on a horse for the first time in about 28 years and trekked around the beautiful Nevada wilderness on another morning. We visited Carlo’s Bakery, saw gondolas in Venice and flamingos in hotels. We ate too much and got sunburned.
At the end of the week I truly didn’t want to come home and have been raving about it ever since. I’d go back tomorrow if I could and happily eat humble pie. Vegas, you had me at ridiculous.

Thanks so much Charly, I guess I’ve learned to never judge a book by its cover, or something like that! X
Sounds great but I want a FATBURGER now! Thanks for linking up #bigfatlinky
Haha yep I think I ate enough in those few days for about 10 people!
