What I’ve Learned This Week

londonlights

Normally my Monday posts take pretty much the same format. I love doing a little weekly look back on some of the happy, positive moments from the week before because it’s really focused my mind and made me so much more grateful for all the little joys in the every day. No more rushing headstrong through life, but rather stopping to look at the leaves on the ground, smelling the frosty air, savouring every sip of a hot chocolate.

Last week though, last week my glass-half full, unending optimism and positivity was put to the test when my backpack that I’d taken to an exercise class was stolen. It was no-one’s fault and my bag could have been taken anywhere. It was more just a huge annoyance that my work laptop, house keys, debit card, watch and mobile phone were all stolen. And a sense of foreboding and creepiness that whoever took it stood just a few meters from where I was participating in my weekly Pilates. Able to see me. Went through my bag. My belongings. They even took things out that they didn’t want, like my socks. A selective thief.

I wasn’t hurt, nothing of any sentimental value was taken and everything has long-since been locked down with replacements on the way. All that’s left to linger is a slight sense of vulnerability but life goes on and really, there are far worse things happening in the world. So instead of dwelling, here’s what this unfortunate incident made me feel grateful for last week.

My Neighbours

To this day, I feel so fortunate to have the most amazing neighbours. Neighbours that take your mail in and you know you’ll get it back. That you can leave a key with. That will keep an eye on your house whilst you’re away and mean it. That aren’t noisy or inconsiderate. That clean your gutters “just because”. It was to my neighbours that I fled after the class on Thursday, anxious to get the spare keys to make sure that whoever had my keys hadn’t got to the house before I had. And they were so lovely and told me to call the police and then came to check on me later.

The Police

I haven’t always had a brilliant time with the police, I won’t lie. Like when we were living in Hammersmith and I called them because I could see someone breaking into a car outside our flat. They asked if it was my car and when I said no but I’ve had my eyes lasered and have better than 20/20 vision and could give them the best eye-witness account they’ll ever hear, they said “there’s nothing we can do if it’s not your car”. So it was with reluctance that I called them to report my stolen bag but they have been brilliant. I was told someone from the local force would call me back within 24 hours and they did. She was lovely and we ended up having quite a laugh. Then someone else called me to let me know liaison support officers would be visiting on Monday. Faith restored.

My Colleagues

Who of course, I love. I don’t often have my work laptop on me so of course it’s sods law that when I do, it gets taken. Our HQ told me not to worry and that a new one would be with me in just a couple of days, consider it done. And to all of them who I share an office with, in fact forget it, most of life with on a daily basis, for making me laugh when really I just wanted to punch the wall and wish a curse of plagues upon the burglar.

To Life In General

Because it’s bloody great and I’m incredibly lucky and fortunate to live this life. In the grand scheme of shit stuff that’s happened to me in the past, like being estranged from my Dad or not being able to have children, having my bag stolen doesn’t even rank. Some kind of miracle was happening in my mind that day because I always take my wedding ring and engagement ring off when I exercise and put them in my bag and for some reason I didn’t. Fortuitous no end.

And so no matter what, you can’t keep a good woman down. Without a phone, I can’t be distracted by Instagram and am actually getting things done. And they only got my skanky Samsung 5 mini, not my new iphone7 that thankfully hasn’t arrived yet. So I’d say all in all, it’s been a pretty good week, really. Lots to be thankful for and lots to keep me smiling.

I hope you’ve had a lovely week X

Oh Lins, how crap. I’d find the whole thing really, really creepy too. It just leaves you cold to think that someone could do that. But yes, definitely a positive that you kept your rings on. Hope you’re okay xx

Thank you Rachel for stopping by and commenting. I feel more or less on top of it all now, most things have been replaced and everyone has been so wonderful and supportive. These things happen I suppose! Xx

Ah Lins, I love your positivity! I have a similar approach to you, I try not to let anything ruin my day/ life. I see a silver lining in every situation and just blank out crappy stuff. Its sometimes easier said than done, but I don’t see the point in wasting my precious energy and emotions in a negative way. Shit happens in life, but its our choice how we deal with it. I’ve had some crap over the years too but I haven’t let it take over. Loved this post X

Thanks so much Kate for your lovely posts and I feel exactly the same – there will always be the odd defeatist day but I generally try to surround myself with only positivity and ignore the negatives. Life goes on and it’s very short Xx
