It feels like such a long time since I sat down on Sunday to write a little weekly catch-up/happy list. With a weekend away in Berlin and two weekends prior dedicated to giving the garden a bit of makeover, blogging time at the weekend has been in short supply. That’s not to say that lots of lovely things haven’t been happening so here’s the last 3-4 weeks rolled into one post!
It was such a treat to have a long weekend away so early in the year. We stayed at the Radisson Blu hotel which would have been very central in old East Berlin and it was the perfect location to get our walking shoes on and explore this marvellous city. Such a sense of modern history and of a younger generation trying to move forward and be vibrant and creative. I absolutely loved it and would love to go back now we’ve familiarised ourselves with the layout. We have lots of photos to share so I’m sure there will be at least one or maybe more posts to come.
The Back Garden
A few weeks ago, we randomly decided to get a skip. The skip arrived, we puzzled over what to put in it. And then spurred on by the thought of not wanting to waste money, we joined forces with our neighbours to clear decades of overgrown bushes and brambles, rotten small fences and chicken wire and then they very kindly fenced all the way down. For free. Now not only do we have a garden that looks bigger than it did, we are officially dog proof. It took two weekends and was completely exhausting but so worth it. Once we’ve finished clearing all the roots and giving the soil a bit of a rest we can think about what to do!
Not much makes me happier than being out and about, exploring new places and meeting new people. It’s something I never would have done in my 20’s, feeling too shy and self-aware (despite studying in the US when I was 19 and moving to London by myself at 21, go figure!) Anyway, yes. These days I’m a happy, positive, try anything once 37 year old and it’s incredibly fun. From dinner with Miele and a Michelin chef to an evening with author Alexander Masters and hanging out locally with Hotter shoes, its been a fun few weeks and there’s much more to come.
A couple of weeks ago we went out with my Mum and Stepdad for lunch at Brasserie Zedel (dreamiest art deco interiors) and then to see The Comedy About A Bank Robbery at the Criterion Theatre. I wasn’t sure whether I’d enjoy it because comedy/slapstick isn’t really my thing (despite the fact that I laugh like a hyena at least 20 times a day) but it was so funny. If you get the chance do go and see it and definitely pay a visit to this beautiful restaurant, just make up an excuse and go!
This is the biggie and you can read more about why here. When I stopped eating meat – overnight – around 15 years ago it was the easiest thing in the world to do because it was my choice. When I was diagnosed with a gluten-intolerance about 18 months ago that was causing horrendous IBS, it was not easy to quit gluten. Even though I knew it was making me very ill. Turning vegan is a choice, an absolute no-brainer and I’ve never been happier. I’ve started a new instagram account to document my little tips and things I find along the way and have been literally overwhelmed at the amazing support out there. Looking for vegan food on Instagram is a veritable way to lose LOADS of time.
Another working week awaits and I can’t wait to see what it brings. I hope whatever you’ve been up to the past couple of weeks its been fun X
