Monochrome Bathroom Makeover Part I

Carpetright Mardi Gras Vinyl Flooring

To the casual observer, our home probably looks quite finished on social media. New windows and a re-rendered exterior; a log burner in the living room and freshly painted bedroom. There are certain rooms though that I never share on Instagram and our family bathroom is one of them.

I say ‘family bathroom’ like there’s a tribe of us living here but of course it’s just me and Pete. So maybe ‘main bathroom’ is more appropriate since we also have an en-suite. The bathroom isn’t really used apart from as an extra toilet when guests come and to wash the dog when the fox poo is too overwhelming!

It’s probably fair to say that our bathroom isn’t massively offensive but it just looks run down and tired. When Carpetright got in touch to see if I’d be interested in a monochrome bathroom project featuring their stylish Mardi Gras vinyl it seemed like the perfect opportunity to prompt a mini makeover.

Eventually we want to update our bathroom completely, replacing the window and retiling as well as changing the suite and *gulps* relocating the boiler (that decision is still a huge bone of contention, I want it moved to a future utility room to make way for a standalone shower but we’re concerned about the cost…)

For now though, I knew a new floor could make a world of difference and I have to say Carpetright have been absolutely fantastic. Being where we are in SE London, I liaised with their Orpington location to schedule a fitting and they kept me updated with progress throughout. From the initial call, it took around a week for the vinyl to arrive in stock and we scheduled the fitting for ten days later.

On the morning, Steve and Paul arrived to tackle our small bathroom space. The original collaboration project had been for us to remove the existing flooring but since so much of our home is a cowboy job by previous owners, I was too worried about messing something up. For a very small additional charge, Carpetright removed and disposed of the old flooring before clearing the surface and laying the vinyl.

I’m used to having workmen around the place and always do my bit to hopefully make them feel welcome and provide tea and coffee. Having practical skills is something I’m so in awe of and both Steve and Paul were lovely, getting on with the job at hand but being very personable with it. Paul even gave me advice on how I can save time on our staircase restoration project and tucked a bit of loose carpet back in for me. Winning!

In next to no time the vinyl was laid and literally it feels like a different room. The previous dark flooring was completely practical for the family of 5 who lived here before I do appreciate but the room felt very dated and dark. Now it already looks bright and modern even though there is still so much to work to do to complete the transformation and is so much more welcoming to our guests. It also feels lovely underfoot so all round we’re delighted. Stay tuned for the finished monochrome bathroom makeover project in a month or so!

Vinyl always feels so nice underfoot in a bathroom doesn’t it – much warmer than tiles! I look forward to seeing makeover part 2! #HomeEtc

It really does! And what I love about this one is that from a distance it has the appearance of tiles, too X
