Interiors: Planning a Kitchen

The other night I was lying in bed waiting for Pete to come home and I started looking on Pinterest. Ah, Pinterest. The drain of many hours of time in a not terribly justifiable way apart from to inspire.

One of the many things I’ve been using Pinterest for is to come up with ideas and inspirations for our future plans, one of which is to build a kitchen at the back of the house. Our existing kitchen nearly lost us this place and when I think how close I came to saying no, it scares me a little bit. Pete had seen the house during sunny daylight one December weekend, I came back to view it on a rainy, grey December afternoon. As I stood in the kitchen with the very tall estate agent, the two of us seemingly filling the entire space, everything screamed no no NO! This was not the house for us.

Thankfully the rest is history of course as we bought the house but certainly for the first 6 months I really hated on that kitchen. We’ve now done about as much as we can do and you know what? The kitchen is ok. It’s perfectly well sized for the two of us and bouncy mad Maddie (although the previous family of 5? I have NO idea how they coped with this kitchen) and memories of our previous home which we rented and had a lovely extended open plan kitchen-diner have faded.

However, my dreams of what our kitchen will one day be are very much alive and kicking and I love nothing more than flicking through home magazines and scouring the internet for ideas and plans.

Currently, our dining room and kitchen are next to each other, both opening out onto the patio at the back of the house. The dining room is a fairly decent sized room but we rarely use it for its purpose and instead it’s mainly where Maddie hangs out during the day when she’s not out with our lovely dog walker. So what we’d like to do is build directly onto the back of the dining room to make a large open plan kitchen/diner, turning our existing kitchen into a utility room.

We’ve got quite a long garden, approximately 100ft, so even if we built out over the existing patio we could landscape an entirely new one and still have plenty of garden space left to make it worth doing.

Here are some images I’ve pinned so far (all images courtesy of Pinterest).

Quite a few of the houses on our side of the road have done something similar so we know it should at the very least be possible, but of course all of these things come down to budget. A girl can dream though, right?

Do you use Pinterest for inspiration? I’d love to hear about any major projects you have planned.

I love your kitchen ideas – I would love something similar: modern, light-filled, opening on the garden… Ah, we can dream can’t we? The thought of the work terrifies me though!

Thanks Lizzie, I know what you mean about all the work, there’s a part of me that knows somehow the house will never be finished…or at least by the time we get to the end it will be time to start again 🙁 Hopefully it will be worth it though! X

Oh I really need to learn to do Pinterest but I don’t seem to be able to grasp it ha! They are gorgeous images you have pinned. A big open kitchen was on my wish list too, ours isn’t huge but I sit in it all evening. Good luck with your plans X #HomeEtc

Thank you Lisa, it’s amazing how kitchens have gone full circle – years ago they were hub of big, working class families and living rooms were kept for “best occasions” then I think kitchens resorted very much to functionality and now we’re back in an era of wanting the kitchen to be the heart of all things sociable too. Hoping these dreams of mine come true one day! X

In all honesty Fionnuala I have no idea how people do ever decide. I have enough issues trying to decide what DVD to watch let alone what kitchen to build. Hopefully it will come to me in a lightbulb moment x

Aaah this is a subject close to my heart!! I’m DESPERATE to update our kitchen and often scour through Pinterest looking at things we either:

    A. Can’t afford
    or
B Have no hope of achieving as our house is Grade 2 listed and we can’d change the layout!

I can’t WAIT to update our kitchen — although a lottery win may be on the cards first!! 😉 I look forward to seeing what you do with yours! Thanks so much for linking up with #HomeEtc — hope to see you again tomorrow! x
