Interiors: Seeking Romance with a Juliette Balcony

juliettebalcony

Just a few days before Christmas feels like the strangest time to be writing about letting more light and air into our bedroom but as 2015 comes to an end, our thoughts are turning (as always, in a million different ways!) to a long list of home improvements we might tackle in 2016.

One of the rooms we keep on coming back to is our bedroom, up on the top floor in a loft conversion that the previous owners completed. It’s a super sizeΒ with two velux windows in the roof on one side and a window overlooking the garden on the opposite side and whilst there’s more than enough room to swing several tigers let alone cats, we can’t help thinking that the space isn’t being used to its full potential. The only place currently for the bed to go is under the eaves which means we can’t sit up easily in bed and there’s a vast swathe of dead space in the middle of the room.

Our heads are full of ideas to improve the room and make it not only more functional but a more sanctuary-style space and at the moment we’re considering turning the under-eaves area into a walk-in dressing room/storage space which means we could remove the wardrobes and relocate the bed. A house sold recently nearby that had such a cleverly designed loft conversion with exactly this type of layout and until I saw it online I had no idea that we even had that potential.

They’d also made extra use of wall space overlooking their garden by fitting double doors and a Juliette balcony, again something we hadn’t thought of. Our window is fine but if there are ways to improve it, then why not? As it’s at the top and in a more modern build compared to the rest of the house it can get very stuffy in the summer and having doors instead of windows would be the perfect way to cool the room down as well as bring in extra light. We have nothing behind us apart from the garden and huge oak trees at the bottom so it’s a fairly calm and peaceful view by London standards, it would be so dreamy to let as much of the outside in as possible.

As always for inspiration I’ve turned to Pinterest (credit the above image here) and you can see my Juliette balcony board here. You never know, maybe Pete might be encouraged to stand at the bottom and express some romantic declarations πŸ˜‰

Do you think we’re mad to want to change things that don’t even really need it?!

Oh those balconies are amazing! I’m in love with with the velux-window balconies, perfect for roof rooms… I would truly love this in our house! Perhaps unnecessary- but if I could splash the cash, I so would! They’re too dreamy, go for it! X

Thanks so much Kerry, I think there will probably end up being a lot of unnecessary in the house but if it’s pretty who cares πŸ˜‰ X

Oh my goodness, that room makes me want to have one too. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?! I love balconies and I think those floor to ceiling doors are just amazing. The extra light that you get is fantastic. You know you’ll never want to get out of bed though, right?!

Haha well I already struggle with getting out of bed, especially once my electric blanket is on (I’m really 90 years old!) X

Oh I think it would be amazing! What a great way to change up the space and add more light, just imagine being able to open those doors in the summer. I would love a bedroom like that! xx #HomeETC

It would be really lovely, definitely! Especially since we don’t have anything behind us we could really make the most of the extra air and light without feeling that people can spy on us. Thank you for stopping by X

I thought that was your room until the end of your post, that room is stunning. No I don’t think you are mad at all, as you say, if you can improve, why not. Your ideas sound fabulous. I would love that door and a balcony too, you can never have too much light, in my humble opinion xx

Go for it, you wont regret it. We have a balcony off of our bedroom and there is nothing more mazing that throwing those doors open on a summers morning. In fact one of my projects for next year is to change the wooden posts to glass panels.
