Interiors: Stylish Sleeping With Button & Sprung

A few weeks ago I was invited to the West London showroom of bed and mattress makers extraordinaire, Button & Sprung. Enviably located on the River Thames (and temptingly close to The River Cafe), the showroom is housed on the first floor of a former warehouse which makes for a beautiful display space with large windows and stunning views.

Aside from the stunning location, what struck me first about Button & Sprung is the passion behind the brand. The entire team are utterly committed to the best possible experience for the consumer and can talk at length about the whole manufacturing process from start (at their factory in Yorkshire) to finish (delivery and assembly in your home). You may have already heard of them – or at least seen their beds in a magazine or newspaper somewhere as they’re in high demand with every publication from Beautiful Homes to The Guardian Magazine.

So – from the start. There are 9 different mattresses which are all available to test in the showroom and I may have hopped on to a bed or two, you know purely for research purposes. Prices range from £395 for a single ‘Borderdale’ mattress which has up to 2,160 springs, all the way up to £4,500 for the super king-size ‘Teesdale’ mattress – this latter may sound like a lot but what price to pay for a good night’s sleep? When you really breakdown the cost compared to how often a mattress is used and how important getting the right one is for health and well-being, cost isn’t really a factor.

Button & Sprung are entirely UK-based and life begins at their Yorkshire farm where a flock of Swaledale, Texel and Leicester sheep provide the natural fillings for the mattresses, before a short 20 mile journey to the production factory. And this is where the innovation really kicks in because they have their very own spring laboratory which has produced IQ springs, so called owing to their hourglass design and ability to react progressively to different body weights. This means that for two people sharing a bed who in all likelihood will be significantly different weights, each person will be as well supported as the other.

It doesn’t stop at just one later of springs though. The IQ springs are surrounded by smaller layers of micro springs which are then padded with the home-grown layers of filling which could be any one of the following: cotton, flax, wool, Egyptian cotton, Mohair and horsehair, silk, Yorkshire wool, Cashmere and Herdwick wool. The showroom has jars full of the different fillings so you can sample them and really feel and compare the textures.

Once the fillings are added, the mattresses are stitched together by craftsmen in the Yorkshire factory and are then ready for home delivery. Even then, the customer service is end-to-end – they promise a two hour delivery slot so no waiting in all day, will take away your old mattress and fully assemble if a bed is being delivered too. It’s a nod to service of old which in my humble opinion is very hard to find these days and in my own experience since we’ve been home-owners is sorely lacking even from companies which you would expect to do better.

Button & Sprung also offer beautiful bespoke bedsteads and divan beads. In the case of the bedsteads, they start with a handmade solid beech frame, and you can pick the size, base, headboard, fabric and feet. With 12 designs and over 50 fabrics, the opportunity to create something really unique and stylish awaits.

Whilst we’re not in the market for a new bed just at the moment as our guest room needs completely gutting before we can even think about furniture, there’s no doubt in my mind where we’ll go when we’re ready. It’s not just about the quality for me, it’s everything – the passion, the design. Being made in the UK and outstanding customer service. Plus there’s a sheep to greet you at the entrance – what more can I say? Pop along and have a cuppa, treat yourself.

Oh Lins those beds look so comfy. I love that you were able to see all the fillings of the differnt mattesses and that it is a UK company. The older I get, the more I like to shop local where possible and the more I like to know where my purchases were made and how.

I absolutely agree wholeheartedly! WHen I was younger it was all quick living and cheap disposables, now I’m much more interested in better quality and accountability too X

Looks a great visit, and it’s lovely to hear about a company with so much passion. And glad you were able to do a bit of bed hopping all in the name of research 😉 xx #homeetc

Looks fabulous, I am so fussy when it comes to the perfect bed. I’m just about to give my bedroom a makeover and just adore that grey buttoned headboard. It would be perfect. #homeect

Aah that’s so funny!! We’ve just given up our sprung mattress — that’s full of sheep wool and horsehair — for a new fangled foam one!! We’ve always gone for Hypnos mattresses — very traditional — but have been given the opportunity to review a memory foam one from a company called Leesa.

I must say — 2 weeks in and I think I may be converted!! Although am reserving judgement until a full month’s up. Love this post Lins — lovely photos 🙂 Thanks SO much for linking up with us on #HomeEtc xx

I’ve heard really good things about those Leesa mattresses so I’m sure you’ll love it for the long term too 🙂 I definitely think they’re such a sensible investment but I do understand lots of people don’t want to spend money on them too Xx
