What’s Next For Our Home?

A 1930s Home Makeover

Thoughts of future home plans have been keeping me awake at night. I’m not afraid to admit that sometimes it all feels very overwhelming. I know how lucky we are and literally not a day goes by when we don’t talk about it out loud so it’s definitely not a lack of appreciation. More that feeling that with both of us working full time, a lot of time passes where we genuinely can’t be bothered to carry on with the next project, the future plans.

In a determined effort to carry on making progress and not letting so much time pass, it’s time to break it down. Little updates are so much more manageable and will leave me happier that things are getting down albeit in a baby steps way. So here’s the next three home updates on our list:

Painting Our Bedroom

A few weeks ago we had Sharps out to see what may be possible for reconfiguring our bedroom. We’re on the top floor as the previous owners built a loft conversion but as with everything in our house, it really wasn’t well thought out. They left the freestanding wardrobes which were handy at the time but means the only place for our bed is under the eaves. We want to have some fitted wardrobes in this area instead, creating an almost open-plan walk in wardrobe and move the bed. I wasn’t terribly impressed with Sharps, it was more about everything that they couldn’t do for us instead of listening to what I wanted.

So the plans are on temporary hiatus but I think a lick of paint and a bit of reorganisation with the furniture we can move and it will really transform the space. I’ve found a colour so the Easter plans are for me to paint.

A Mini Bathroom Makeover

Our main bathroom is so unattractive that I don’t think I’ve once put a picture on social media. Granted, there are worse out there but it’s really not good. There is black vinyl on the floor with holes in it. Two showers, both over the bath, neither of which work. The entire room is tiled top to bottom. It’s just a bit of a car crash really but as much as I’d love to hide it away from the world, it does serve as our guest bathroom since we don’t have a downstairs toilet.

Having been approached recently by a flooring brand who offered to collaborate with me, it’s just the impetus we need to carry out a mini-makeover until bigger renovation plans happen in the future. I’m now excited to see what we can do to style up the space and who knows, the bathroom may start appearing on Instagram in due course…watch this space!

Continuing The Garden Tidyup

Recently and unexpectedly, we gave our garden a bit of an overhaul, clearing a jungle all along one side and replacing it with fencing. That fencing has now been painted and next up is creating a seating area in the top right hand corner which collects the best sunshine in the morning as well as marking out a border down the right hand side. Our garden is fairly typical of 1930’s properties being much longer than it is wide and sometimes just stepping onto the patio scares me but I’m so impressed with what we’ve achieved over the past few weekends so anything is possible!

Do you have imminent home plans? How do you decide what order to do things in?

I so know that feeling of overwhelm when there is just so much to be done, and only evenings and weekends to accomplish it. Deciding what happens next has usually been out of our hands really – when we started the office we needed to knock out the doors in the hallway, which meant the hallway was getting done, so we needed to address the horrible glass in the bedroom wall, so the bedroom was next, and so on! Right now our priority is the home office which is currently a tool store and general dumping ground, literally stuffed to the gills with things, because straight after Easter the builders are starting on the kitchen and I will have nowhere to work! But we are off to stay with my parents tomorrow til the day the builders start so who knows when we’re going to get it done?! I may have to rent an office space for a couple of weeks, or maybe the weather will hold and I can work in the garden – that would be lovely! But basically, we are kind of haphazard in deciding the plans, it all sort of falls into place bit by bit! And slowly, we are getting there. The kitchen is the last big project (except the wilderness we call a garden) so I am really excited to crack on with it, even though there are at least 3 other rooms which need finishing! 🙂 xx

I think it’s definitely ok to give yourself a bit of break! At least until the summer maybe? The mini bathroom makeover sounds great, I bet it’ll make a big difference. We’ve just had a load of painting work done, so I don’t think we’ll do much more for a while. The only thing that really desperately needs doing is our back porch which is slowly sinking into the ground and looks really crap! I’m mainly working on the garden at the moment too xx #HomeEtc

I really appreciate your honesty in this piece! As lovely as it is to read about someone’s ‘grand kitchen makeover plans’ or ‘lounge re-design’ (that obviously cost a lot of ££££!) those types of projects are few and far between for most people and I’m so with you when you say that doing little projects here and there help momentum to tick over and keep that overwhelming anxiety at bay. Have seen your Cornforth White investigations over on Insta Stories and look forward to seeing how the room turns out! x

It is hard work making over a home, and especially when you are working full-time, I don’t blame you for feeling overwhelmed. Definitely do a little at a time, or even have a break for a while xx

It’s so true about little and often. At the moment we’ve got a bit of a groove going and so are keeping up with things which makes a nice change! X

You’re so similar to us, it’s ridiculous. We spend hours talking about our house plans too. And how MUCH there is to do — on very little cash!! LOL!! We’ve been renovating various houses for the last 20 years. Maybe one day we’ll jack it in and buy a new build…. (doubtful — I love old houses too much 😉 ). Re your bedroom — have you thought about making some built in furniture with IKEA units? They look so amazing when they’re floor to ceiling — with coving added. Plus you could configure the interior any way you like — probably MUCH better than Sharps all round. Especially price!!! Something like this — https://www.pinterest.com/pin/541909767645657701/

It’s so hard isn’t it to know which way to turn half the time!! Yes I think we’ll rethink the bedroom plans when the time is right, for now though just repainting it has made a WORLD of difference. Can’t wait to finish it all and share in a future #HomeEtc post! Xx

Have you thought about getting in a local chippie to do your wardrobes? We did for our bedroom and paid about £700 to have wardrobes fitted into eaves along a 6 metre wall, including boarding throughout because there was no plaster and no floor. We’re really pleased with how they turned out and I imagine Sharps would have charged us a lot more x x

Great minds!! Funnily enough we have a local builder who runs his own company so has access to all the traders and we think that will definitely be the way to go forward when the time comes. For now though our temporary bedroom makeoever is shaping up beautifully! Xx
